Re: The First Spark [Tetsuji | Invite Only]

Tetsuji's kick came in, with as perfect a form he could muster and he watched Kyoshi as he could from the corner of his eye as his body rotated. The clever kid changed up their initial bout, instead of mirroring it as they had before and blocking the kick outright, he ducked underneath him. It was an interesting decision, one that Tetsuji knew he could pay dearly for if his opponent were superior, not only having only a single leg to balance himself in that moment but also as Kyoshi ducked under him, he would gain a momentary disappearance from Tetsuji's field of view. The idea that 'out of sight, out of mind' couldn't be more false as Tetsuji began to hold himself from panicking at the loss of vision on his opponent.

He'd accounted for this move, he knew what to do and he knew how to approach, though he couldn't see what his opponent was doing in the end. It was such an easy way to turn the momentum of his strike against him and against a truly dangerous opponent, Tetsuji could be done for in a moment. He continued his rotation towards Kyoshi, with his leg hovering over the top of him as he ducked down. Still on the ball of his foot, Tetsuji could use the momentum to continue his spin all the way around and return back to standing if he could. It was risky, certainly if Tetsuji were more physically capable and skilled then he could find other ways around it but getting back to standing as his opponent could make his next move was probably too dangerous to truly risk. The thought of how different this fight could be if he had his sharingan crossed his mind for a brief flicker, just as it had before but there wasn't a real point to dwell on it.

The idea hit his head as he knew what he could do, a rather grandeur movement but it would cost him a good bit of his stamina and concentration to get away with it. Instead of letting his right leg rotate back to the ground, he would hop up and turn his body backwards, letting his left leg swing forward and follow the same movement as his right leg had just a moment ago. At the very least, his movement would save his body and head from Kyoshi's reach as he would get to move them away and when Kyoshi stood back up to strike, his next leg would be moving in to make contact instead.

It was as good a plan he had and with all the might in his calf and his lower body, he pressed off the ground and began to rotate himself again. But, instead of meeting Kyoshi's body or head and feeling the rush of Kyoshi's counter-strike coming towards him, he instead seemed to make contact with his leg against, Kyoshi's own leg? His eyes were rotating downwards already as he hovered in the air looking down and it would be just then that he would see his opponent had ducked to the ground and kicked upwards again, aiming for another heavy shot to the jaw.

The small memory of the blow brought a small phantom ache to his chin as he saw him positioned again but instead a small crawled across his lips. His arms were in front of him at the moment and angled down so that he would be able to catch himself on the ground in a push up hopefully but everything changed in that instant.

His right arm would remain but his left arm would quickly reach back and try to grab Kyoshi's leg, wherever he could muster to find a grip on it at all. That was everything, to make contact and grab onto him. Once that was done, his plan would change to rotate a bit more with Kyoshi in tow, letting his leg be the vulnerable one in this situation. Falling and rotating with Kyoshi's leg in hand, he knew that if he could spin enough to move upright and fall on his back instead, he would be able to use his left arm to pull Kyoshi's ankle towards his armpit and lock his leg out as they hit the ground.

If he could pull it off, it should be enough to end the fight, maybe after a bit of resistance but once he would start to turn the ankle and pull Kyoshi's oddly bent leg, the pain should be enough to force him to tap out of this fight. Well, hopefully enough, granted that Tetsuji had the focus and clarity to pull of his own combination without Kyoshi able to counter out of his combo again.

Re: The First Spark [Tetsuji | Invite Only]

The next few moments of Kyoshi’s life seemed to pass by him in slow motion. With his kick already on the move, he was beginning to feel confidant that the fight would be over in the next few seconds. But what he did not account for was the acrobatic display that followed his own attack. Before the young Sarutobi could even react, Tetsuji was completely in the air, with his own leg blocking Kyoshi’s kick. The vulnerability f an opponent hanging in the air did not go unnoticed by Kyoshi, but whether it was from fatigue or pain, the red haired academy student could not bring himself to counter attack before he felt the grip of Tetsuji’s hand on his own leg. That feeling, that one small feeling of Tetsuji’s hand on his ankle, caused Kyoshi to release all of the tension in his body. The fight was over, and he had lost. Even if he did not know it yet, his subconscious did.

Falling and rotating with Kyoshi's leg in hand, Kyoshi rolled along helplessly as Tetsuji managed to spin enough to move upright and fall on his back, and then follow up with a relentless tug on Kyoshi’s leg, locking it in such a way that, in his exhausted state, meant there was little left for his to do but give in. He struggled for a moment or two, grunt and pulling, trying to reach back with his own hands to fight off the Uchiha that had him pinned, but it was to no avail. As he felt Tetsuji begin to twist his ankle and a pain went shooting up though his twisted leg, he let out a bit of a cry. “Yikes! Alright, alright, you got me man!” He reached back with his hand and tapped the Uchiha on the back, signalling his defeat before the chuunin in charge of the fights stepped up to them to break them apart.

Huffing and puffing, Kyoshi got to his feet and placed his hands on his knees, leaning on them to catch his breath. It had been a tough fight, and he had worked hard. But in the end, he was the loser. He gritted his teeth in frustration for a moment while his face was still turned toward the ground. He didn’t want the other students to see him so frustrated. But in truth, he was seething; not at Tetsuji, but at himself. He was supposed to inherit a great legacy someday. He was supposed to pass on the Will of Fire to the rest of the village, just like his father before him, and like his grandfather did to all the people who joined the Sarutobi clan back when it was first formed. But he could not even beat an Uchiha in a sparring match. How was he supposed to measure up to that level of greatness?

The loss shook him a lot more that he had originally expected, but technically the match was not over. With one last deep breath, Kyoshi stood up straight and walked over to the chuunin in charge, a smile on his face now, and his hand expected with two fingers ready to make the unity seal with Tetsuji. The kid was good in a fight, and Kyoshi could certainly learn a lot from him. He tried to focus on that aspect of the battle as he waited for his partner simply so that he would be able to calm down a little bit. Besides, he would certainly have enough time for self-loathing when he got home. So for now, he smiled. “That was a good fight Tetsuji! Looks like I’ve got some more training to do so that I can catch up to you. But next time I’ll beat you, just wait and see!”

It didn't feel like long, his holding his position and moving through the motions of his attack. In fact, it was over in an instant as his own instincts took over and guided him through the movement, letting gravity and his rotation take command and finish the combination. It was made easy by Kyoshi's lack of resistance as they went to the ground, even though Tetsuji most likely compromised his own form and movements in passively finishing through, it wasn't until his leg was locked and on the ground that he struggled.

The moment that had passed was blank in Tetsuji's mind, as he snapped back into awareness at the first resisted tug, he knew what he had to do and began to rotate the heel and apply the pressure needed to win the fight. It was a quick moment from when he decided to leverage the torque on Kyoshi's leg to when he yelled out and then continued to tap out from their fight. It was the instant that the hand hit his back to signal his surrender that Tetsuji felt a small rush of relief and his hand released Kyoshi's leg from its twisted position directly. Sliding backwards and away from the boy as their sensei approached them, aiming to guarantee that they separated cleanly and without hostility like so many fights ended with. Tetsuji mereley pushed himself back and placed a hand to his knee to calmly stand back up, doing everything in his willpower to hide his own exhaustion and fatigue from his opponent while they stood up.

Tetsuji stood up straight and controlled his breathing, knowing he had to guarantee that facade that he was unbreakable, the bruise on his face from Kyoshi's kick would most likely begin setting in but that didn't bother him in the slightest at the moment. He stood towards his opponent as their sensei began his short rant about the Unison sign and forming it, Tetsuji's eyes wandered over Kyoshi and checking his condition while he continued to hold himself together.

The boy smiled and approached with two fingers formed to make the Unison sign and making a comment about how it was a good fight and vowing to their next one. It was an interesting point to throw out at the end of their loss, and with their sensei watching next to them and the rest of their class in the background of the sparring area, Tetsuji blinked in response and lifted his own arm with two fingers bent to meet Kyoshi's hand and form the seal.

With the sign formed, at the release of their hands and when their sensei would turn back to pick the next fight out, Tetsuji would calmly speak up in response, "I doubt you'll win. You don't need more training, you need awareness..." he'd pause for the briefest moments to catch Kyoshi's attention more fully, "You could have easily won. You could have broken my knee with your kick and left me helpless when you ducked again, instead of going for my head again. It wasn't your training that lacked, it was your instincts..." he trailed off with his voice kept low underneath their sensei's so as not to disturb his callout for the next spar.

Still, with his words finished, Tetsuji stepped forward to move back into the crowd of students and left Kyoshi with his words and no real chance to respond against it before his shoulder and head had turned away and he was shuffling from the scene. It did strike him though, his own superiority in that moment as he'd beaten a classmate and won the spar. But what struck him even more was that his father's words were sticking in his mind, his own words mimicking it so closely as he walked away. Tetsuji would almost grit his teeth at the realization that he'd be pushing someone else in the same way but it's what he knew and how he knew to respond to a fight. There were no vows to win 'next time' in the ninja world, every spar needed to be a lesson to push the next real fight to victory, to prevent one's own death in battle, and to guarantee the success of the mission. These spars were just lessons to learn and advance his skills from. That's all they were and Tetsuji abided by it.

Re: The First Spark [Tetsuji | Invite Only]

The young Uchiha linked his own fingers with Kyoshi’s thus ending the fight officially. Their hands released not a moment later, and their sensei began choosing the next pair to fight. It was disappointing to Kyoshi that he had lost, but at the same time, it was a bit of a relief to know that the fight was over. He was going to be sore in the morning, that much he knew for sure. But for now, he just had to deal with a bruised ego and an exhausted body. As the pair walked back to join the rest of the class, Tersuji spoke up, catching the young Sarutobi’s attention. "I doubt you'll win. You don't need more training, you need awareness..." he paused for the briefest moments, allowing Kyoshi to focus his attention more fully, "You could have easily won. You could have broken my knee with your kick and left me helpless when you ducked again, instead of going for my head again. It wasn't your training that lacked, it was your instincts..." he trailed off with his voice kept low underneath their sensei's so as not to disturb his callout for the next spar.

Kyoshi was a bit aghast. On the surface, the comment seemed like an insult. He thought Kyoshi would never have what it takes to take him down, and that he would lose their next fight even before it had started. And for the briefest of moment, Kyoshi wanted that slight insult to be the only thing that he heard. But he was too smart for that, and he knew that Tetsuji had a point. He let out a quiet sigh as he processed his classmate’s words. He was right of course. Kyoshi merely acted on instinct, not forming a strategy or going for the optimal strikes. He was fighting reactively, which was not in and of itself a bad thing at face value. But combined with the fact that Kyoshi’s instincts were not honed to the level that they should be, it meant that Kyoshi was being a hindrance to himself. He needed more practice. But not just with fighting others, but with forming strategies as well. He needed to improve his situational awareness so that he would be able to pick out attacks like the one Tetsuji had pointed out. He needed that level of experience.

Or he needed to learn from people who already knew.

Quietly cursing himself, Kyoshi thought back to all of those classes that he fell asleep in. He thought about all of the times that he doodled in class instead of taking notes, or when he would crack jokes instead of properly answering questions. It was pathetic, in all honesty. Sure, Kyoshi had a lot of natural talent, and his ability to control chakra was really impressive for someone his age. But being impressive would not save him in a life or death fight. There were so many fundamentals that he simply had not considered to be important, and that had finally come back to bite him. He wanted to look back up at Tetsuji and say something…anything at all to let him know that he understood. But the boy was already lost in the crowd of peers in front of the young Sarutobi.

Shaking his head, Kyoshi turned back to face the spar that was starting. He was going to change his ways starting now. Instead of taking a break and kicking up his feet while the other students fought, Kyoshi was going to learn from what he watched. He was going to grow in awareness. And some day, maybe not tomorrow, and maybe not the day after, but someday, Kyoshi was going to beat Tetsuji in a fight. Then he would be the one giving advice, not the other way around…
