A Very Productive Day (Solo)

Post by Hibiki on Mon Apr 02, 2018 11:12 am

Today was going to be a good day, Hibiki could just feel it or some reason. He woke up early but still felt rested, his eggs were perfectly cooked (as always) for breakfast, and the weather was half decent. It was technically his day off, but after such a good start he just had to go out and train to make the most of it. The young ninja pulled on a pair of casual shorts, a t-shirt and a coat. He didn’t need the coat just yet, but he undoubtedly would later on in the day. There was no way his day would go quite that well surely.

He popped his head around into the forge to give his mum a smile and a quick wave “See you later mum, I’ll be back later tonight” his mum gave him a knowing nod, she trusted her son to be back at a semi reasonable hour. Hibiki turned to dash out the door when he was met with his brother’s apron in his face “Not just yet Hibiki, you forgot this” His brother held out a bento box with a warm smile “Its got your favourites in, you can’t be going out all day without food” the guy had a point and Hibiki happily accepted the box, bowing a little before dashing back to the door to slip on his sandals “You’re the best bro, I owe you”.

Hibiki held onto the bento box carefully as he dashed down the streets, there was no way he was going to drop the food his brother lovingly prepared for him. It wasn’t so much that he minded being hungry, but it would feel wasteful after somebody went to that effort for him. He truly appreciated what his brother did for him on a daily basis and would make it up to him one day with something big.

He didn’t live too far from the academy, his home doubled up as the smith and shop so it made sense to be near the ninjas to win their business for maintenance and weapon supplies Hibiki leaped over the fencing and made his way to the training grounds. There was one or two people about, but not too many which was to be expected at this time of the day. Most people would be at the training grounds, still asleep or at home enjoying a day off.

HIbiki carefully placed the bento box in the corner and wrapped it inside his coat. It stopped the box and the inside of his coat getting wet if it rained so it was useful both ways. Right, now the warm up! Hibiki always felt oddly awkward when warming up, he was always nervous about if he did it enough, if he did too much, and if he looked weird. He knew full well this fears were unfounded, but fears had a habit of being illogical in this setting.

Starting with his neck, Hibiki looked left and right, turning his head as much as he could to the count of twenty before starting to circle his arms forwards. He softly counted under his breath, changing the direction once he hit twenty and reset the count. Next was his torso, keeping his hips locked in place, Hibiki turned his torso side to side, letting his arms fling out with the motion before releasing his hips and pivoting on the ball of his foot to get the full range of movement. Next down his body was the hips, he made large circling motions once again to the count of twenty before changing direction. Knees, these were a little awkward but he put his legs together and rotated his knees in a similar fashion to his hips to the count, lastly was shaking off and rotating his ankles and wrists.

Well that was his joints warmed up a little and the sprint here got his heart pumping a little so that was all he needed for the warm up. Well that was relatively painless and nobody looked in his direction so he didn’t need to worry about how it looked, that was the joy of not many people being about, you could see everybody else if you wanted to.

he thought about just what to do was an obvious one, it was going to be what he enjoyed most given he had a good feeling about today. That would be taijutsu, he didn’t want to go up to anybody to ask if he could spar with them because he wasn’t quite sure how to go about that. That was the downside to having very few people here, all eyes could so easily be on you. Instead, he slowly started to throw strikes in the air, a variety of punches, kicks, knees and elbows. It felt quite soothing when it went well but throwing strikes with control slowly was difficult without getting lazy. It was especially difficult on certain kicks aimed at head height. Hibiki was relatively quick, but he needed to work on his strength, with strength comes stability and from there comes the ability to do smoother movement which in turn further heightens the force he could generate.

He made a mental note to ask his brother about his workout routine, his brother might stick to doing housework all day but he was in good shape and Hibiki had seen him move heavy lumps of metal with relative ease. Perhaps that was the key, simply moving heavy things a lot for years? He didn’t want to wait years though, so whatever his brother said he did would be doubled! Clearly, Hibiki hadn’t learnt how to pace himself yet.

For some reason, this brought his mind to a concept that he had been told about just the other day, it was the notion that all blocks were strikes. It was really quite obvious really, but he hadn’t thought about it before. Motioning through a few basic blocks like inner forearm, inward block, high block and low block it made a lot of sense. He closed his eyes as he imagined striking with each one. Without quite realising it Hibiki motioned through a series of blocks, elbows and backfists moving in a circle. He was imagining being in a narrow alleyway with a stream of people coming his way and making his way through them whilst sticking to the same area himself as not to lose ground.

But wait! You didn’t go on missions alone, you were teamed up and for good reason, it would be far more effective to deal with mass numbers if the person at the front disarmed or disorientated those coming towards you and passed them back to be taken out in this sort of situation. It made sense for the person at the front to be the strongest to disarm/disorientate the incoming people quickly to pass back. Hibiki assumed this wouldn’t be himself so he put himself mentally in the position of the person at the back killing or knocking out those passed back to him.

He had never been so into a mental simulation before so didn’t think anything was weird when he felt contact on one of his elbows, that was until he heard somebody speak “Nice moves there, you’re a first year right?” Ah crap, Hibiki was certain he’d elbowed somebody in the face now and flinched. That had to be sarcasm.

Hibiki slowly opened his eyes, he couldn’t help but let out a relieved sigh when he saw a hand cupped around his elbow, though it was at head level and quite close so he was lucky this guy was skilled enough to intercept the strike. The fact it didn’t hit and the fact the guy had a friendly smile didn’t stop him bowing his head and apologising humbly. This only served to make the other boy laugh a little who proceeded to pet his head…. this was unusual from somebody at the academy but the guy was the same height as him so he guessed it made sense

“My name is Tatsumi by the way, you really did have some nice moves but keep your eyes open. The last thing you want to do in battle is close your eyes to focus out of habit. Don’t get me wrong, it’s useful but don’t do it when you do drills”

The guy did look a bit older so he probably knew what he was talking about, it made sense now he thought about it. Hibiki tried to keep his face neutral and nodded “Thank you, would you mind training with me a bit?” It was only now that Hibiki noticed the two bokken on Tatsumi’s back, the way they were secured made them look like a permanent feature rather than a training aid. Perhaps his family didn’t let him have a metal weapon yet or something.

Tatsumi reached back and flicked one of the bokken up into the air and caught it without even looking and held it out towards Hibiki “I assume you’ve used these before?” Hibiki nodded and took hold of the bokken. He’d barely got a grip when he felt a smack across the head. That mother fucker didn’t wait for him to get ready. Hibiki backed off and gripped the bokken properly with both hands and blocked an incoming flurry of strikes. It was hard to keep up, this guy was certainly fast and seemed to know his stuff. Judging by the force against the bokken, he got off very lightly with the earlier knock on the head.

He suddenly held his ground when he realised he was getting close to the bento box! He refused to crash into that and jumped against the wall and bounced off as his grip shifted to one hand, his left hand grabbing onto Tatsumi’s shoulder. His momentum carried Tatsumi off his feet and sent him onto his back whilst Hibiki landed on his knees with his bokken pointed down at Tatsumi’s neck. He was aware he wouldn’t have won that exchange though, why? Tatsumi’s bokken was milometers to the side of his neck and clearly could have speared him if it was aimed properly with a metal sword.

Hibiki rolled away as a kick came flying up towards his head, barely dodging in time. The dust kicked up from rolling away worked against him as a thrust of the bokken came towards his chest, knocking the air out of him as he scrambled to his feet. It looked like his good day was getting better, he found a fun sparring partner.

Hibiki continued to back off, distancing himself from the bento box so that didn’t have to be on his mind. Once he was a comfortable distance away Hibiki halted and ducked down, thrusting his bokken at Tatsumi’s right shin only to change the angle to sweep Tatsumi’s feet out from under him, to Hibiki’s own surprise it worked. Despite being fast, strong, and skilled, Tatsumi seemed to be open to being knocked off his feet, even if he could deal with what came after.

This proved true once again, Hibiki had a double footed kick to the chest for his troubles when he stepped in to strike, sending him back a few steps. That taught him something, something he hadn’t thought about earlier when he grabbed Tatsumi, fighting with a weapon didn’t mean you had to just use that weapon. As a downwards strike came towards his head, Hibiki reached up and grabbed the edge of the bokken, it hurt his hand like hell but he had Tatsumi trapped for a second. He switched his bokken into a reverse grip and slid his right foot forwards, so he was side on, and slammed the hilt into Tatsumi’s ribs… or that was the plan, his stroke was intercepted by an open palm which cushioned the strike and overpowered his grip on the weapon as he was push kicked in the chest.

Hibiki fell on his ass without a weapon and squinted up at Tatsumi who now held both weapons and secured them to his back whilst laughing “You’re good for an academy student, you learn fast. Don’t feel too bad though, I’ve been a genin for a just over a year now, I was stopping by for old times sake” Well…. this guy just made himself sound like he had hit the mid-life crisis a few decades early talking about old times. Hibiki stared blankly as he contemplated the fact this guy was apparently feeling nostalgic after just a year, his bs detector was going off but he couldn’t prove it and that didn’t shed any more light on the reason he was actually here.

Tatsumi spoke up once more, but it seemed he was giving one last bit of advice before heading off “Don’t forget to drill the basis till you don’t even need to think about what you’re doing anymore, they’re more important than you think, see ya” With a friendly wave Tatsumi vanished, so he could move that fast…. Hibiki was starting to doubt he was a genin now and realised he had been holding back massively the whole time, well shit.

Hibiki tided himself up, brushing off the dust on his clothes and glancing down at his hand, it looked like it would bruise but that was fine. He’d worked up a bit of an appetite after that so strolled over to his bento box. His eyes practically light up when he opened it. Inside was sweet and sour stir-fried tofu, a pumpkin croquettes, two takoyaki and some egg fried rice. His brother really was the best! He crossed his legs and placed the tray down as he started to make his way around the dishes.

The croquettes had a nice crisp exterior with a soft inside, not at all greasy and cooked just right. The takoyaki was amazing, he could live on those and had actually tried it before, his mum gave in first and threatened to starve him unless he ate some “proper food” whatever that means. The rice was just rice, nice and well-made but nothing flashy. Now the sweet and sour stir-fried tofu, that was his favourite dish, it was filling and had a balanced flavour that hit all the right notes be it in taste or texture.

He let out a satisfied sigh as he wiped his mouth when he was finished. He needed a lie down after eating that, his brother’s portions were a little too big, he worked it off but he almost always had to nap after eating his lunch to help it go down. It did see him through till it went dark without needing more food though, so it was good for that. It didn’t take long for the young ninja to drift off, the closed bento box resting on his chest.

His eyes fluttered open some time later as he felt rain hit his forehead slowly, the first drops came slowly and softly, but it soon sped up. Hibiki shot to his feet from his sleep and dived for his coat, he wasn’t a big fan of the rain despite where he lived. He wrapped himself up and dashed inside with his bento box. Once inside he took his coat off again and draped it over his school desk and sat back in the chair.

Hibiki let out a big sigh, his day was going great then that happened, he guessed he was stuck indoors for a bit now. He glanced around the room to look for something to do, the chalk….. he’d always wanted to draw on the board and nobody was in class and needing the board today……..

Hibiki couldn’t resist it, he dashed out of his chair with a mischievous and innocent grin on his face. It was rare he got the chance to do something he’d always wanted to with nobody about. All those rebellious urges he’d felt for months were finally being let out! What was Hibiki doing to release these urges? Write a naughty message or draw something inappropriate? Nope, he drew a large cat drinking some milk. It was actually quite a good sketch really but ruined a little by the big title of “Best art ever” that as underlined and in shaded bubble font at the top. Yeh, really classy Hibiki.

That passed about half an hour but it was still pissing it down outside, he didn’t want to go home and he could hardily do anything physically indoors….. he guessed that meant genjutsu reading, he really didn’t like genjutsu because it just didn’t suit him. Wait…. there was one other option, something he’d never studied himself but had experienced quite recently. Medical ninjutsu. It always looked difficult to him, but he was quite good at academics so he hoped he’d be able to do it. He strolled over towards the book cabinet and traced his finger along the spines of various books as he hummed a little until he came across a book title “Iryōjutsu for idiots” well, he guessed that was an invite

He steadily pulled out the book and started to let his eyes scan over his text. He started to zone out but his brain was taking it in, the principles seemed straight forwards enough and it wasn’t dissimilar to other ninjutsu even if it required a certain focus. He would try it out tonight in his room, he figured a visible injury such as a small cut would be ideal to test this.

From what he read, the bruising on his hand might be a little difficult for a first timer, a tiny cut should do it. That way, if he somehow made it worse, it wouldn’t do too much damage. Almost as if on que with him finishing reading, the rain started to ease off a little and the sun started to go down. He guessed that meant it was time to head home, his stomach growling only reinforced this. He knew takoyaki was waiting for him when he got home, he wanted them hot if he could help it!

Hibiki took a notebook out of his desk, he wasn’t sure if he was allowed to take this book home or not given it was in the classroom and not a library. The next best thing to taking it home, would be transcribing the important part about the basic jutsu and the theory behind it. He checked the diagram twice before he was satisfied, he should be able to work with that later.

Hibiki glanced up at the clock and outside before ripping the pages out of his notebook and neatly folding them to place inside the inner pocket of his coat. He grabbed his bento box on the way out and started to take a leisurely walk home. He’d worked quite hard today, so he figured he earned a nice walk home rather than a breakneck sprint. Besides, after all that rain it probably wasn’t too safe to go sprinting when he was quite tired.

It was still a fairly short journey, Hibiki was back in the comfort of his home once more, the smell of what Hibiki correctly assumed to be spicy beef udon was filling the house. He took a deep breath in as he slipped off his footwear and hung his coat up and ran upstairs to unfold his notes on his bedside cabinet, just so he couldn’t forget where he put them. The sight of a nice warm bed was enticing indeed… His body asked for just five minutes to rest before dinner but Hibiki knew his body was lying. It would ask for five minutes then switch off for at least two hours which would mean cold beef udon.

Regrettably, Hibiki turned his back on his comfy bed and made his way downstairs. He popped his head around the kitchen door and as expected saw his brother (Hiraku) in the kitchen standing laying some plates out. Hibiki sneaked up behind his brother and hugged him, Hiraku flinched a little at first but he knew who it was. Hiraku brother only had six inches on Hibiki so he was almost as tall already.

Hibiki smiled warmly as he released the hug “Thanks for the lunch Hira, Dinner smells amazing too!” It always smelled amazing, but Hibiki didn’t see why his brother didn’t deserve ongoing praise for it when he did such a good job. He had noticed Hiraku had cleaned the whole house again, he’d even tidied Hibiki’s room for him (not that it was messy or dirty, just slightly untidy).

As expected, Hiraku shook his head as he turned around to pet Hibiki’s head “It’s fine Hibiki, I’ve got this, have fun training?” Hiraku had noticed the bruise on Hibiki’s hand, but he wasn’t that concerned given Hibiki seemed upbeat and he could hardly expect his brother to remain uninjured when training to be a ninja.

Hibiki threw a high roundhouse kick in the air, pausing at its highest point with an innocent smile “Been working on my stability during strikes and lots of other stuff too, I’ll be getting very strong!” Hiraku didn’t know Hibiki could get his leg quite that high, he made a mental note to pay even more attention to Hibiki’s growth “That’s great, I’m already proud of you bro” The sound of a timer caught Hiraku’s attention and gestured towards the dining room “I’m just going to serve up, I’ll be through in a minute”

Everybody was at the family dinner, there was even a mini and mild portion of the beef udon for his little brother (Hayate). Family dinners were always nice, everybody got together and had a nice meal and just chatted about their days and anything they had planned. It wasn’t as exciting as training, but it reminded Hibiki that he was loved and had people who he loved. It was the whole reason he was trying to become a ninja anyway, so it only served to help refine his desire to be better than the best that he could be.

Something that was quite exciting, his mum had mentioned a new technique she was starting to develop to give weapons an even sharper edge that wouldn’t need as much maintenance. It would kinad be bad for business because it meant less ongoing work, but she felt it wouldn’t have too big an impact as she could only do it with larger blades such as wakizashi or katana which make up a relatively small portion of weapons she forges. It made sense to have a weapon that needed less maintenance for long missions, it meant packing less resources which meant the ninja could operate faster and more efficiently.

Just under two hours passed before the family finished talking, they washed up as group to make it quicker too. Hibiki had to wonder if most families were like this, he kinda hoped so because he felt everybody deserved to have a close and understanding unit such as this.

Hibiki let out a loud yawn as he made his way upstairs and stretched his arms up high, on second thoughts the medical ninjutsu practice could wait until tomorrow. It wasn’t that urgent and he really needed to sleep. Hibiki changed into a pair of shorts and gave the notes a couple of reads over before steadily drifting off to sleep. The young ninja in training always slept well after a training day, he used to have difficulty drifting off to sleep when he was younger but not anymore. One of the perks of being a very active young man.
