Knife to meet you again [Solo]

Post by Hibiki on Sat Apr 07, 2018 2:20 am

It had been a year since Hibiki had seen Tatsumi, he hadn't exactly gone looking for him but he had hoped to bump into him once or twice maybe. Alas, he hadn't and neither had he really heard anybody mention him. It's not like they would really. He had been practising with various weapons borrowed either from his family or the academy quite often.

Hibiki was quite confident in his ability to fight bare handed now thanks to his own training, as well as his training with Satori. What needed a little work was his ability with weapons, there were so many different types of weapons that Hibiki found it difficult to develop them all to a similar standard. To try and do this, and actually make progress, he'd been choosing a specific weapon and getting to know and use it each week. He started with shuriken, moved onto kunai, last week was tanto and this week was going to be wakizashi. The idea was he was steadily moving onto larger weapons each time, he was even considering a scythe but he felt that was far beyond his abilities to use.

The wakizashi he was using was one of his mum's, it wasn't a piece that she felt fit to sell in store, but as far as Hibiki was concerned it was still good quality even if it wasn't perfect or fancy. The hilt and sheath for the blade where a smooth slightly polished black whilst the blade itself as pure silver. The tsuka was a deep red that contrasted quite nicely. Hibiki hoped that once he graduated he would be able to own a sword like this.

It felt quite balanced and Hibiki was going through a few basic movements, he was focusing on trying to make them hard but also fluid. It felt quite natural, whilst it was quite different from taijutsu, there were principles that could be carried over such as coordination and targeting strikes. He thought about Tatsumi given he used two swords, only they were bokken. It made him look down at his sheath and think, he could also use that!

The sound of wood piercing the soil immediately behind him caught Hibiki's attention. The sound was slightly different to metal; it was why Hibiki glanced over his shoulder and was surprised to see an old face, Tatsumi of all people with his bokken, one of which was naturally in the ground. Glancing over Tatsumi made it apparent the other guy hadn't grown, they were more or less the same height now, 5ft 3 to Tatsumi's 5ft 5.

Hibiki turned his body around fully to get a proper look at Tatsumi and smiled warmly, it was good to see him again and it seemed that he still had his bokken to hand "Hey Tatsumi, how have you been? It's been a while" Hibiki extended a hand over to Tatsumi to shake whilst he bowed a little, the older male returned the gesture "Not bad, not bad, made special-jounin last week" Hibiki blinked and stood back up right. It was taking a moment for his brain to process what he had just heard, this guy was a special-jounin? That explained why he was so strong before. Wait, no, he was a special-jounin as of last week which meant he was chunin when they had their mini spar. Yeh, he was holding back still that much was for certain.

After what seemed like a few thousand years, but was in reality a couple of seconds, Hibiki laughed awkwardly and bowed again "congratulations" he was hard to keep his cool composure when he just heard that. Tatsumi did look kinda proud judging by his smile and rested a hand on his hip "How have you been anyway kid? Training hard?" Hibiki nodded calmly "Yeh, one of my friends is helping me with jutsu and I am coming along nicely with my basics in taijutsu and Bukijutsu" he was still only doing the basics in his practice, but for visualisation he was mixing together fluid movements and more advance techniques grounded in basics. It would be an excellent time totest them now he had such an experienced person here, but would he want to spar with a newb? Well, that question was answered for him as Tatsumi spoke excitedly "So, you ready to show me what you've learnt?" Tatsumi drew both of his bokken but didn't hand one over. Hibiki looked down at his wakizashi then back up to Tatsumi and gesturing towards it "Yep, use that, don't worry these bokken are extra sturdy so won't be cut easily" Well then, this just got a bit more interesting.

Hibiki wasn't under any illusion about the fact he was still vastly outmatched; even if he had the sharper weapon that was capable of cutting, it was useless unless he made contact. For now, Hibiki didn't want to use his sheath, he placed it to his back securely to keep it as a surprise to try and catch Tatsumi with it at the right moment. His eyes were focused on Tatsumi as he weighed up his options between wielding the blade with one hand or two, if it was a katana he'd choose two without thinking, but he went for one hand so he had one to catch himself and be more mobile.

Hibiki quickly stepped into range, going for a series of quick slashes with a few thrusts mixed in. His technique left a lot to be desired by ninja standards, but he was still quite smooth and his strikes were at least somewhat accurate. He had a long way to grow which was obvious from how Tatsumi smoothly blocked his attacks, it was like the guy could see where and how he was going to strike before he even knew properly himself. What's more, he noticed he had failed to even make Tatsumi move from the spot.

After his frontal assault failed Hibiki pivoted around Tatsumi and aimed a thrust across his back, only to recieve a smack around the face sending him staggering to the side..... that hurt more than last time and stunned him for a second. Not through shock, but because that rocked his brain. He saw the blurred image of a bokken coming down at his head and raised his sword to block it only to feel a pain in his side.

This wasn't what he expected though, it wasn't a blunt pain, it was a cutting pain and made Hibiki retreat to a "safe" distance. He looked down and held his hand over his ripped shirt, yep, there was blood. The wound was small but it confused Hibiki as to how exactly this had happened. There was no blade on those bokken "did you use a kunai or something?" Hibiki asked curiously, Tatumi shook his head "I don't have any on me, only weapon I have is my bokken" it was an interesting way of saying it but the implication didn't hit him quite yet. His brain was baffled by the thought of blunt wooden swords cutting him, not helped from the earlier blow to the head.

Hibiki had hoped to have a moment to compose himself, but Tatsumi was too kind to allow that. He rushed back in range and launched a barrage of slashes at Hibiki, even with Tatsumi holding back, Hibiki could barley manage to block half of the incoming strikes, the rest hit bluntly like he would expect. The force a bit lower than the earlier blow but still hard enough that without medical ninjutsu Hibiki was certain he would be bruised and feel it tomorrow.

Hibiki was completely on the back foot, stepping back with every strike to try and better defend but he couldn't see a single opening to attack. It reminded him of something he heard before, offence is defence and defence is offence. Seeing these movements up close made that very clear, every single strike Tatsumi made covered his openings whilst making a smooth attack. Hibiki was certain there would be some openings if he was faster, but as it stood he couldn't see any at all.

Instead of trying to attack, he focused on the bokken, waiting for Tatsumi to cut him again, then it happened! The bokken slashed across his chest before a blunt thrust slammed into his sternum, making him fall on his backside. Hibiki was coughing to try and get his breath back as Tatsumi stood over him with a bokken extended towards his chest.

Hibiki smiled up at the senior ninja, and Tatsumi smiled back down knowingly as Hibiki spoke "You used wind to coat your weapon in order to cut me didn't you?" Tatsumi nodded "You have good eyes for a student, though you can't let yourself take that many hits to work out the trick behind an opponent's attack. Take them down before they can use it again" Tatsumi's voice was quite firm and Hibiki nodded politely. In a real fight Tatsumi would have blitzed the opponent to try and stop them using a mystery technique again, but he had to try and learn how to deduce what it was from first contact. In an ideal world, he'd learn to avoid it and deduce what the technique was capable of doing.

Hibiki hadn't given up yet, he had an idea using something he'd got down not too long ago. Hibiki sent out a puppet string and attached it to the Bokken pointing down at it and subtly tugged... nothing happened. Hibiki tried tugging a little less subtly before getting to his knees and outright digging his feet in and started to tug with all his might but to no avail.

Tatsumi laughed and flicked the bokken back, sending Hibiki flying through the air and landing front first in the dirt behind him "That only works if you're about as strong or I'm a little off guard, I'm a special jounin remember, I don't have to try that hard to resist that tug so I wasn't off balance. Bonus point for trying though" Tatsumi was turning around to lecture a bit more when a sheath came flying at his gut. He could have intercepted it and batted it away, but he didn't want to damage Hibiki's confidence so took the attack. That actually hurt, he wasn't expecting it to be damage worthy.

Hibiki himself was just behind the sheath with an overhead strike down on Tatsumi's shoulder, now that swift recovery and follow-up was a little surprising. He just about managed to intercept the wakizashi before it bit into his skin, the blade just about cutting the fabric of his shirt. Whilst one bokken blocked the downward slash, he slammed the handle of the other into Hibiki's ribs to the sound of a crack. He visibly flinched as Hibiki crumbled down "Ah fuck... sorry kid" Tatsumi dropped his bokken and lifted Hibiki's shirt up to see some swelling on his ribs already. Running his hand over the area caused Hibiki to wince, Tatsumi realised he'd used too much force by being caught off guard "If it's any consolation, that's because you made me act on pure reflex so I couldn't go easy" Hibiki was still beating himself up quite heavily, he should have guarded up more and he shouldn't have let something like a broken rib make him crumble.

A familiar glow formed over Tatsumi's hand, quite a potent glow too and his pain eased quite soon after the hand hovered over his ribs "I specialise in Bukijutsu, but my second best area is Iryōjutsu so I'll have you back to new in a minute" things went quiet for a few seconds as there was another crack indicating the rib becoming whole again. The swelling died down soon after, whilst he was at it, Tatsumi sealed up the cut across Hibiki's ribs and his chest.

It really didn't take long to do that, but the incident had made Tatsumi a little nervous. He knew he could control himself now he knew that Hibiki was capable of far more than he initially assumed, but that didn't mean he didn't feel bad about what had happened. This wasn't the first time he'd accidentally hurt a training partner either. He wanted to look cool and very skilled in front of Hibiki, this didn't mean he wasn't aware that he was flawed and had a logn way to go. he felt it was his duty to try and look like a guiding light to his juniors so showing weakness like this wasn't good.

It was Hibiki who helped Tatsumi this time, the young boy smiled and sheathed his blade and sprang to his feet as if nothing had happened "Next time I see you, I'll be sure to give you a few lumps and be tough enough not to swell up over a little tap like that" Hibiki was internalising his frustration, he was quite sharp and noticed how apologetic Tatsumi was. As far as he was concerned, it was his fault for being a bad training partner. In reality, it really was Tatsumi's fault, as a special-jounin he should have operated with greater control and assessed the situation better but nobody was perfect.

Hibiki extended a hand over to Tatsumi who accepted and actually bowed first and spoke "Thank you Hibiki-kun, I've got an errand to run now before I head off on a mission but be sure to keep growing stronger, 'kay?" Hibiki smiled and clasped a second hand around Tatsumi's and returned the bow "I will mate, kick ass and come back safe okay? I can't kick your ass if you're stuck in hospital or dead" Tatsumi just laughed, Hibiki was certainly a curious one. In an instant Tatsumi vanished from sight and as if on cue, the rain started to pour down. That was the only thing Hibiki hated about living in Kirigakure, he got wet all the time. He actually liked the rain, but he hated getting his clothes wet because they got all soggy and took forever to dry when it was humid from all the rain.

Despite hating getting wet, Hibiki stood there in the rain as he thought about what had happened in that match. The entire thing played out in his mind, now he was thinking back, everything seemed so much slower in retrospect. The movements were traced into his mind, now he didn't have the pressure of responding to them, he could recall a few small openings he could have exploited in Tatsumi's assault. They were minor and by no means a sure fire bet, but he spent a few minutes committing them to memory and replaying the fight in his head whilst it was at its freshest.

He finally started to head back home when the downpour intensified, each droplet of water sounded like a drum. It would be a nightmare to fight in this if you weren't used to it, the lack of grip on the floor along with the thunderous sound would be difficult to adapt to without prior preparation.

He guessed it was a subtle natural defence his home had, any foreign nation hoping to invade would be in for a bit of a culture shock when it came to the conditions. Likewise, Hibiki was quite nervous about leaving the village for missions later in his career, the thought of a blazing sun in dry heat was quite frankly terrifying. He could only hope he could learn some water style jutsu before then so he could hydrate and soak himself regularly. It's funny how even things you dislike can be comforting if they remind you of home.

Hibiki secured his wakizashi to his back and made his way home. He was the only ninja leaving because of the downpour by the looks of it, they could stay if they wanted but as far as Hibiki was concerned they were slightly crazy. Hibiki planned to train his body whilst he was at home. In anticipation of this very regular event Hibiki had constructed a large hut behind his home with the help of his brother, inside was various weights his mum made along with a punching bag.

It was his own personal gym, the best part was the stronger he got, the heavier weights his mum would make for him so he never had to worry about outgrowing it. The only thing he didn't like about the gym was the fact it wasn't very warm. Given it was made by a ten year old and a sixteen year old, it wasn't exactly built to stay warm. It was waterproof thankfully but he suspected that wouldn't last if the weather was too intense.

Hibiki arrived home five minutes after setting out from the training area. As soon as he got in he stripped down, hanging his clothes up to dry before running up to his room to change his underwear and put on some warm training clothes. He was barely in the house for three minutes before he was leaving out the back door with an umbrella. Even if it was for five seconds, there was no way he was going out in that rain again. Hell no.

Hibiki glanced around the room, things had been moved slightly and he knew why. His brother was trying to get stronger too. He was aware that Hiraku was starting to feel a little insecure and wanted to become strong in order to help protect his family when Hibiki wasn't here, but also to protect Hibiki himself. Hibiki could understand that feeling, it was the reason he himself was becoming a ninja. He could equally understand why Hiraku wasn't trying to become a ninja, if he did then everybody would have to help with the housework and that would hold everybody back a little he felt. Hibiki didn't believe this was true, but he knew his brother well enough to know this was likely his thought process.

Hibiki loaded up some weights onto the bar and lay on the makeshift bench. As he lifted the weights he couldn't take his mind off that sparring match. Not about the openings and what he could have done better, but about that wind blade technique. It was a very subtle technique, Hibiki could never see himself using a bokken like Tatsumi does, but he did see another application.

What Hibiki was thinking about was the possibility of cloaking his own body with a similar technique. If he could use that on his arms and legs, it would make his martial arts quite devastating. If used overtly, it would be difficult to maximise its usage, but if used subtly it could be deadly!
